"MOW" DOWN WASTE AND AIR POLLUTION!
Yard Waste Prevention Campaign Begins With Mower Rebate
** RESCHEDULED FOR 1:00 P.M., WEDNESDAY, MAY 5 **
Walnut Creek - Clean air and yard waste prevention are the combined goals of a new effort to promote grasscycling using clean running electric-mulching mowers. Grasscycling, or mulching grass clippings, is the practice of leaving the clippings on the lawn when mowing. It is a proven way to reduce waste while maintaining the health of the lawn. Joining the goals of waste reduction and clean air, a "race" between a electric-mulching mower and traditional gas powered mower will take place on Wednesday, May 5*, at Civic Park in Walnut Creek starting at 1:00 pm.
Mayors Laura Abrams of Orinda, Erling Horn of Lafayette, and Contra Costa County Supervisor Gayle Uilkema will participate in the race on a special grass course to demonstrate the ease and effectiveness of grasscycling with a mulching mower. "This is an important effort to cut waste and help us reach the states 50% reduction goal" explains Mayor Abrams, Chairperson of the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, "it is exciting that both waste reduction and clean air can be accomplished in one important activity grasscycling!"
The race will kick off Contra Costas Grasscycle! Clip Your Waste Campaign and the electric-mulching mower rebate project. Starting on May 1, Contra Costa residents will have the opportunity to trade in their old gasoline powered mower, and in return, receive a $150 rebate toward purchase of new corded or cordless Toro or Lawn Boy electric mulching mower. The trade in/rebate program will be available at Josephs Lawnmowers in Pleasant Hill, Concord Garden Equipment, and Rodeo Small Engine. A total of 200 rebates are available countywide, starting May 1, on a first come, first serve basis. Rebates are available to Contra Costa residents only and interested persons should call to check for rebate availability.
Yard waste continues to be a significant part of Contra Costas waste going to the landfill and grass clippings make up about a quarter of this during the growing season. Contra Costa County and its cities, along with Napa and Solano Counties, are one of only two regions in California to receive special grant funds from the California Integrated Waste Management Board to establish the Grasscycle! Clip Your Waste Campaign. Promoting grasscycling, the Grasscycle! Clip Your Waste Campaign is sponsored locally by Contra Costa County, the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, the West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority, and the Cities of Concord, Martinez, Pittsburg, Pleasant Hill, and San Ramon. Additional funding support for the electricmulching mower rebate project comes from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the California Air Resources Board, PG&E, and local Toro/Lawn Boy retailers.
* In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Tuesday, May 11
